Bloc warns against letting 'Calgary' control Quebec's future

The advertisement, which was published in a newspaper in eastern Quebec, shows a cowboy hat and says, in French, "We won't let Calgary decide for Quebec."

Tory Leader Stephen Harper, who represents the riding of Calgary Southwest, has been hoping his party will wrestle a few of Quebec's 75 seats away from the Bloc and the Liberals in Monday's election.

Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe defended the ad campaign as he campaigned near the provincial capital on Saturday.
He condemned the Conservatives for the party's opposition to the Kyoto Protocol, which aims to combat global warming by reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and has been ratified by more than 150 countries, including Canada.

Duceppe also attacked a Tory candidate in the region, accusing him of supporting policies that help Alberta-based oil companies instead of aluminum smelters in Quebec.
"We're just telling Quebecers that the interests of Calgary are defended by the Conservative Party," Duceppe said.
"When they're talking about not respecting Kyoto and making Quebec pay for the rich oil companies, that doesn't serve Quebec's interests but it does help the interests in the West, for sure."
