Bloc candidate gives birth before election-day due date
Last Updated: Thursday, January 19, 2006 | 10:11 AM ET
CBC News
The Bloc Québécois candidate running against Liberal Leader Paul Martin in a riding in Montreal has given birth to a baby girl, say Quebec media.
Chiu came under fire from Montreal's Chinese community when she announced she would run for the Bloc. Local leaders called her a traitor, saying the community has voted Liberal for 50 years.
May Chiu had her baby on Wednesday, although she wasn't due until Jan. 23, election day. She had been campaigning since the election was called.
Chiu, a 40-year-old single mother, named her baby Tian.
Chiu is a long shot to get elected, even with the sponsorship scandal dogging the Liberal party in Quebec. Martin has held the riding of Lasalle-Émard since 1988, winning in the last election by more than 11,000 votes.
