Martin courts 'progressive' vote

Paul Martin pleaded with "progressive" voters to support the Liberal party, saying that Jack Layton would be powerless to stop the Tories from implementing their agenda.

"The progressives have got to vote for the Liberal party because we have a progressive view of where Canada's going," Martin said at a campaign stop in Milton, Ont.

Martin said Harper's position on a number of issues is at odds with progressives.

"What would have happened if Stephen Harper had been prime minister? I can tell you, we would be in Iraq at this time, and Jack Layton couldn't have stopped it."

"I was the one that said no to ballistic missile defence. Stephen Harper has said yes, and if he ever became prime minister, Jack Layton couldn't stop it."

"Stephen Harper said he would withdraw from Kyoto, and if he ever did Jack Layton couldn't stop it."

Martin appealed to progressive voters in all parties to give their support to the Liberals.

"What I am saying to you is that in order for us to do what we want in this country, the time has come for every progressive voter, whether you're a progressive Conservative, whether you're Green or NDP, to come with us"
