One hundred supporters gathered for what turned out to be a phone call from Halifax. A large speaker was set up so Layton's message could be heard throughout the hall and he could take questions.
Layton went after the Conservative promises of tax cuts in his message to Bathurst, saying it didn't leave room for social spending.
"Shouldn't we make sure we have good public health care first? Shouldn't we make sure we're looking after our seniors? Our young people? Shouldn't we fix the EI fund first?" Layton asked.
Employment Insurance is a major issue in the northern New Brunswick riding. Layton promised the NDP caucus would work with Godin to ensure the best 12 weeks of employment are used in calculating benefits.
Yvon Godin is looking for his fourth term representing Acadie-Bathurst.
Layton also cancelled a planned visit to Quebec City Wednesday, replacing it with a speakerphone call.
Layton's revised itinerary had him arriving in Saskatoon late Wednesday afternoon before moving on to a campaign event in Edmonton on Wednesday evening.
