The Liberals would put $25 million into a new fund to support the families of firefighters and other emergency responders who die on the job, as part of a package aimed at public security workers.
But the Conservatives and NDP immediately condemned the announcement, pointing out that the Liberals voted against a similar proposal put forward by the NDP just three month ago.
Standing in front of a phalanx of firefighters in Niagara Falls, Ont., Paul Martin announced the new "heroes fund," which would provide $250,000 to the families of firefighters, police officers and other public safety officers who are killed on the job.
The benefit, he said, would be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2005.
The Liberals would also introduce a new tax credit for people who volunteer in the public security field.

And he said the Liberals would also spend $140 million over five years for tools and training for emergency responders.

"It's a policy of convenience, " NDP Leader Jack Layton said.
The Liberals countered that the NDP motion was only limited to firefighters but that their policy includes all public safety officials.
