The Conservatives would spend $200 million a year to provide more affordable housing, leader Stephen Harper said on Thursday.
Harper was in Halifax to announce the tax incentives he said would encourage private sector builders to build or refurbish low-income rental housing.
The plan would provide $200 million a year beginning in 2007, he said. The money would be spread across the regions on a per capita basis, Harper said, but every province would get a guaranteed minimum.
"This is not a phoney promise of a quick fix, it is a genuine practical plan to increase the supply of affordable housing," Harper said.
The tax credits would be administered by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, he said.
Harper also reiterated his party's plan to reduce the GST.
"Our tax plan will deliver greater benefit to all Canadians," Harper said.
