NDP recruits N.L. candidates

Last Updated: Thursday, December 22, 2005 | 11:48 AM ET

The New Democrats have named their candidates in two Newfoundland and Labrador ridings.

Sandra Cooze, a writer and former teacher, will represent the NDP in Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor.

She will be challenging Liberal incumbent and Conservative candidate Aaron Hynes, an aide to an Ontario MP.

Meanwhile, Eugene Conway, the former mayor of Conception Harbour and a businessman, is running for the NDP in the riding of Avalon.

Conway ran provincially for the NDP in Harbour Main-Whitbourne in the 2003 provincial election, placing a distant third.

He ran for the Progressive Conservatives in the same district in 1996, placing second.

Avalon is currently represented by retiring federal cabinet minister John Efford.

Lawyer Bill Morrow is running for the Liberals, while Fabian Manning – who was kicked out of the provincial PC caucus this spring after disputing crab policy – is representing the Conservatives. Shannon Hillier is the Green party's candidate.
