As many as 200,000 Canadians may be south of the border in their winter homes on election day, and the chief electoral officer wants to make sure they all have a chance to vote.
Jean-Pierre Kingsley said on Friday his department will run newspaper advertisements in Florida, Arizona, Texas, California and parts of Mexico.
The ads will tell Canadians in those areas how to vote by mail.
About 50,000 ballots were cast by mail in the last election, Kingsley said. He hopes to do better than that for the Jan. 23 vote.
Hoping to get the youth vote out, Kingsley also has plans for a campaign in Canada, on TV, radio and in movie theatres.
The advertising and outreach campaigns have a budget of $10 million.
The whole election will likely cost Elections Canada $277 million, the same as the June 2004 election.
