Ex-Surrey mayor aims to replace controversial MP Grewal

Last Updated: Thursday, December 1, 2005 | 6:44 PM ET

The recently defeated mayor of Surrey, B.C., is seeking the Conservative nomination in the riding vacated by controversial MP Gurmant Grewal.

Doug McCallum is a onetime member of the federal Liberal party. He says he now supports the Conservative platform and is seeking that party's nomination in Newton-North Delta, the riding held by Grewal since 1997.

"After thinking about their (the Tories') platform, I sort of like their platform at this stage anyways," said McCallum, who was Surrey mayor for nine years before losing by 10,000 votes to Dianna Watts last month. "I like the fiscal [platform] – the economy, jobs. And that's certainly what I worked hard on in the city."

McCallum has to win the nomination before he can run in the election.

Grewal announced his resignation earlier this week, saying he won't be in the race for the Jan. 23 federal election for the good of the party.

He was the subject of a number of investigations and gained national attention after releasing secret recordings of his conversations with top Liberal officals.

Grewal alleged that tapes showed he and his wife Nina, also a Conservative MP, would have been rewarded in return for supporting the Liberal government in the no-confidence vote last May. The Liberals denied the allegations.
