Duceppe makes Gomery key discussion point

Last Updated: Tuesday, November 29, 2005 | 6:09 PM ET

Bloc Québécois Leader Gilles Duceppe's key issue as he launched his federal election campaign on Tuesday was trust.

"In Quebec, there is no place for corruption," Duceppe said. "You cannot trust the Liberals, but you can trust the Bloc Québécois."

The Bloc held 54 of Quebec's 75 seats when the election was called, and hopes to build on that base in the Jan. 23 vote.

Anger in the province is high over the sponsorship scandal, and Duceppe said the election gives voters the chance to do what the Gomery inquiry could not.

"Judge Gomery did not have the mandate to sanction the Liberal Party of Canada. The voters of Canada will have that mandate; they will be able to sanction the Liberals in the next election vote."

If voters in Quebec express their anger over the sponsorship scandal on election day, the sovereigntist party stands to nearly sweep the province. Already the dominant party in federal politics in Quebec, the BQ's only real competition comes from the Liberals.
