3 Ways to Wear Jailhouse Stripes

Jailhouse stripes cut a strong, lean and confident silhouette. They flatter all body types, while horizontal stripes are a lot more difficult to wear since they can visually widen the body. Black and white is also always on trend and can be worn year-round. As Iva Grbesic shows us, there are also multiple ways to wear them throughout the week.

For each of these looks we started with an affordable silk shirt from Joe Fresh.

Weekend

Jailhouse Stripes for the Weekend

Neutrals are a great way to style black and white vertical stripes.

For a casual and relaxed weekend look, we went with a light worn-in skinny jean and added a beige peacock jacket to help soften the strong graphic lines of the shirt. Paired with a cute ankle bootie with glam gold detailing, it keeps the whole outfit from looking too slouchy.

You can add many neutral shades like camel, mushroom and grey to make the outfit more interesting and effortless. Nothing matches but everything goes. Leaving the shirt untucked lengthens your torso and brings the focus back to you when paired with this neutral coat.

Office

Jailhouse Stripes for the Office

Mixing pattern with colour is a great way to shake up your work wardrobe. This vertical stripe blouse can easily be paired with bold hues like red, oxblood or a rich emerald green. These parings will make you stand out in a crowd without looking too trendy in most corporate environments.

For our office look, we added a smart black blazer and paired the shirt with a very bold A-lined jewel toned skirt to break up the all-black look. Selecting a pencil skirt or straight pants makes for a sleek silhouette and is very work-appropriate. A structured black leather bag works with smart black pumps and for a hit of unexpected texture we added a gauzy printed scarf.

Date Night

Jailhouse Stripes for Date Night

Date night is all about fun and feeling great. This is a great time for texture like leather, pattern (here we've chosen leopard print) and a splash of colour. Think of vertical stripes as a print "neutral" and try pairing it with animal prints, polka dots, horizontal prints and florals. You can add all these elements when wearing vertical black and white stripes. The trick is to keep the focus on the blouse and great pants and do small accents like shoes, handbags and jewelry.

When selecting leather pants they need to be tight because they will stretch. Buying a size that is just right now will be all wrong later as it stretches too much and becomes loose and ill fitting.
