With the holiday season fast approaching we know drinks are going to start flowing. To help us all survive the holiday season, holistic nutritionist Joy McCarthy shares some holistic hangover preventions and cures.
Hangover Prevention Tips
It may seem totally obvious but we couldn't possibly put together this list without talking about water! Try your best to drink a glass of water between every single drink of alcohol. By drinking one glass of water for every shot, glass or can of alcohol you drink you will almost guarantee yourself no hangover the next day.
Also make sure you skip the mixed cocktails full of sugar. Sugar is a recipe for blood sugar imbalance, which means headache and upset tummy.
Chug Before Bed!
If you can’t or forget to rotate your drinks, the next best thing is to chug 3 or 4 cups of water right before you hit the hay. This will help to rehydrate your body while you sleep, reducing your hangover the next morning.
The "B" fix
Supplements can actually help your hangover! In addition to chugging water before going to bed you should also take a B-complex vitamin. Our B's are drained when the liver is processing alcohol and B vitamins help the body better process alcohol. So taking them before bed is a win-win! Make sure you buy a B-complex vitamin and not a regular B vitamin because they are processed differently by the body.
Cure the Queasiness: Ginger Honey Lemon Elixir
Lots of people turn to a ginger type soft drink when they're hungover, but that actually doesn't help much because these drinks are full of sugar, often making you feel worse. The ingredients in this elixir have some amazing benefits. Ginger prevents nausea and lemons aid in liver detoxification. Honey is soothing, replenishes sugar lost, and helps to rebalance blood sugar. This elixir can last for up to two weeks in the fridge.
Cure the Headache: Homemade Sports Drink
Many people think sports drinks help you recover from hangovers, but again, they are filled with sugars and chemicals that often make your hangover worse than before. A much better alternative is to mix water, maple syrup, a splash of juice and a pinch of sea salt to make your own headache cure. The water helps to rehydrate, the maple syrup provides the sugars in this drink that are lost when one is dehydrated, the juice adds some flavour, and the sea salts give you minerals/electrolytes.
Detox the Body: Detox Smoothie
This is the ultimate hangover detox smoothie. Blend one banana, half an avocado, a quarter cup of dark berries, a handful of spinach, half oa cup of frozen or fresh pineapple, two cups of coconut water and bee pollen. Every ingredient will help speed your body to a full recovery. The avocado has good fats that balance blood sugar. The banana has potassium to help prevent dehydration, as does the coconut water. The leafy greens help to detox. And the bee pollen has lots of B vitamins, which as we now know are very helpful when recovering from a hangover.
