When life gives you lemons, make more than just lemonade! Lemons are inexpensive, but we don't always get as much out of them as we can. Here are some tips on how to use your lemon in its entirety.
Freeze Your Lemon Zest
Zest your lemon with a rasp or zester, and freeze it in a freezer bag. You then have it ready to use it in baked goods, salad, marinades, pasta, etc.
Squeeze Out Every Drop
Roll the lemon firmly on a counter with the palm of your hand or zap in the microwave for about 10 seconds to make the lemon soft. Then, cut it in half and juice it with a lemon reamer or citrus juicer.
If you need just a little bit of juice, prick your lemon with a short skewer and squeeze just enough.
Don't forget, you can freeze lemon juice in an ice cube tray so it's ready to use whenever you need it.
Don't Throw Out the Shell
Believe it or not, lemon shells are perfect for cleaning the microwave. Immerse the lemon shell in a bowl of water, and cook in your microwave on high until the water boils.
Leave the microwave closed for 10 minutes to allow the steam to work and the water to cool down. Then, wipe the inside of the microwave with a damp cloth.
