Ask S&C: Walmart Makeover!

A dining room needs to be versatile. After all, you're not always hosting a dinner party for 12; most nights, it's just you and the family gathered around the table. But with its affordable, practical and stylish Hometrends line, Walmart is the perfect one-stop shop for all your dining room decor needs, saving you time and money. Just style and repeat!

Dining Table
When it comes to choosing a dining table, sometimes two is better than one. Placed side by side (as shown), these two tables seat eight comfortably for family dinners; end to end, you've got yourselves a buffet table perfect for entertaining a large group. And at just $149 a piece, that's a lot of bang for your buck!

Shelving
Again, more is more. Open shelving is a great way to display dinnerware, photos or other decorative items in a dining room. But rather than investing in a heavy, inflexible unit, opt for three narrow shelves like these ($99 ea.) instead, which also boast velvet-lined drawers along the bottom for closed storage. We placed glass vases across the top to unify the shelves without looking cluttered.

Dinnerware
Versatility should be top of mind when selecting tableware as well. For our money, you can't go wrong with restaurant-quality white dinnerware. This 16-piece set goes with anything and is only $29.87, while the flatware feeds eight for just $40 (pictured at top)!

When it comes to glassware, be practical and look for stems with similarly shaped bowls. That way, when someone breaks one (it's bound to happen sometime), you can sub in another without anyone being the wiser.

This edition of Ask S&C was inspired by a very pregnant Vanessa, who wrote:

Hi Steven and Chris,

I am now in my ninth month, and we have been so focused on the baby's new room (and my husband on the living room) that we have just left our dining room bare.

I would love some help getting this space pulled together.

Thanks,
Vanessa

Not only did we give Vanessa a jump-start with some great inspiration from Walmart, she also received an $1,000 gift card to outfit her space!
