How to Create a Stylish Family Eat-In Area

Are you bored of your kitchen design and want to create a room that's more enjoyable for casual family dining? Designer Trish Johnston shares her tips on how to design an eat-in area that's all about family.

Switch Up Your Table Placement

Consider moving your the table from a horizontal position to a vertical position. This creates a booth-style effect.

Play with Chair Styles

Don't go too matchy-matchy. In this vignette we used four black chairs and one accent chair at the head of the table. Mix textures like these slick black chairs with one cozy hide chair.

Layer Your Lighting

Consider the use of multiple pendants over the table. Add a table lamp! This adds style and ambiance and warms up the table.

Have Fun with Accessories

Play with colour and pattern and add a touch of whimsy. Make it feel intimate and welcoming.

Layer Rugs

Have fun with pattern and texture like this striped rug layered with black cowhide.

Choose a Bold Wall Treatment

Conisder a playful and fun wall treatment like this one from Rollout. It's interesting, unexpected and playful. Black pushes the cozy look one step further. Framing the wallpaper makes it feel like art!
