DIY: The Gift of Food

In this DIY Steven and Chris create fun and easy gifts for any hostess, food lover, or gardener!

1. Layered Recipe Jar
Here Steven and Chris have layered all the ingredients needed to make a delicious cookie or soup recipe; a fun gift for any occasion!

Instructions
1. In a jar, layer the dry ingredients of the recipes below.
2. Seal and add some decorative ribbon or fabric to the top
3. Add a gift tag to your jar with the cooking instructions listed


Curried Lentil Alphabet Soup

1 pound red lentils
Pinch of Salt
6 tablespoons minced dried onion
2 tablespoons curry powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 pound green lentils
2 dried chilies
2 tablespoons dried parsley leaves
2 Cups of dried alphabet soup letters

On the gift tag include cooking instructions:  Add the contents of this jar to a saucepan with 7 cups of low sodium vegetable broth or water. Bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.

Walnut Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
2 cups flour
1 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups oatmeal
1 (12 oz.) package chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups walnuts (chopped)
1 c. butter
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons milk

On the gift tag include cooking instructions: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl cream together 1 cup of butter, 2 teaspoons of vanilla, 2 eggs, and 2 tablespoons of milk. Add the contents of the jar and mix until combined. Chill dough, roll into balls and bake on a cookie sheet for 10 to 12 minutes.

2. Homemade Thirst Quencher

In this DIY Steven and Chris assemble some ingredients to make their favorite drinks; all you need is a pitcher and some imagination.

Instructions
1. Add the ingredients listed below to a glass pitcher
2. Include a small personal touch like a tea towel or gadget to personalize your gift.
3. Add a gift tag to your pitcher with the preparation instructions

Lemonade

Ingredients
1 cup sugar
1 cup of lemon juice
4-5 cups of cold water

On the gift tag include preparation instructions: Make a simple syrup by dissolving sugar in 1 cup of your water. Add the simple syrup, lemon juice, and cold water to the pitcher.

Sangria

Ingredients
3 ΒΌ cups dry red wine
1 tablespoon sugar
Juice of 1 orange
Juice of 1 lemon
1 Orange sliced
1 Lemon sliced
1 peach, peeled and pitted
1 cup club soda

On the gift tag include preparation instructions: Combine all the ingredients except for the club soda in your pitcher. Let sit and macerate for up to 24 hours in the fridge.  Add club soda and ice cubes immediately before serving.

3. Grow Your Own Herb garden
In this DIY, Steven and Chris have created the perfect gift for the at home cook or gardener

Supplies

Small wooden crate
3-5 small terracotta pots
Potting soil and small bag
Garden markers
Small plastic scoop
Herb - seeds or plants

On the gift tag include growing instructions:  Sow the seeds 1-3 times deeper than the size of the seed. Water newly planted herbs regularly, but once they are established they become naturally drought resistant.

Instructions
1. Paint or personalize your wooden crate and terracotta pots
2. Add some potting soil to a small paper bag.
3. Attach your seed packets to your potting soil and adhere with a decorative ribbon
4. Add your potting soil bag, terracotta pots, garden markers, and plastic scoop to your wooden crate and adhere a grow your own garden label to it
5. You can skip steps 2-4 and plant fully grown herbs for a simple gift that won't require much maintenance.
