Money-Do Jar

Managing your finances responsibly is a daily choice. Money expert Rubina Ahmed-Haq has a fun, easy way to keep your bottom line top of mind: the money-do jar, a twist on the traditional honey-do list. Instead of household chores, the money-do jar is filled with simple savings challenges, each on their own slip of paper. Everyday, pull one out and re-commit to keeping your financial house in order.

Here are some of Rubina's top to-dos to get you started:

  • Make an entire meal using only ingredients you find in your cupboard, fridge and/or freezer.
  • Pretend there is a power outage tonight. From 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., you're not allowed to use any power or lights at home.
  • Go car-less today. Park your car and use other more economical and enviromentally friendly modes of transportation.
  • Sign up for a library card. Take advantage of all they offer and rent some free DVDs. (Don't forget to bring a few pieces of ID with you to your local branch.)
  • Wash your next load of laundry in cold water. In fact, use only cold water for your laundry all this week.
  • Start a grocery list right now and keep adding to it until you hit the market. Don't deviate from your list while shopping.
  • Learn two new financial terms tonight (e.g. compound interest, interest-only payments).
  • Go on the Steven & Chris financial cleanse.
