Figuring out where to start can be the trickiest part of any interior design project. But there's no reason to let a blank canvas intimidate you. We've got a foolproof method for tackling any decorating dilemma: the rule of F.I.V.E.
F is for Function
Ask yourself: What do you want this room to do for you? For example, if you have kids and pets, you need a space that can stand up to the heavy traffic. Make a list of your needs and post it on a bulletin board.
I is for Inspiration
Find inspiring images that you would like to translate into your space. These will become your jumping-off point.
V is for Vision
Bring your inspiration to life by adding fabrics, tear sheets from furniture catalogues and pictures of specific accessories into the mix. Don't be afraid to go crazy here; in this case, more is more!
E is for Edit
Pare back your vision elements until you're left with a reasonable and manageable design framework. Pull out the specific pieces that really speak to you and work best together.

This edition of Ask S&C was inspired by Lisa, who didn't know where to start when it came to decorating the living room in her new home. She needed a kid- and pet-friendly space, so all of the furnishings had to be durable, and closed storage was a must. Also, Lisa and her family live in the country, and she wanted the living room to reflect a similarly relaxed and comfortable vibe—without looking sloppy.
