Carson Arthur made a visit to Steven and Chris to show us all how to trench our trees. It's a super easy process to do and your trees will thank you for it all year long.
How can you tell if you have an unhealthy tree? It's pretty easy to tell...look up. If your tree has bare patches, dry leaves or spots on its leaves, then it's in need of some help. Trees are the least known 'plant' in our backyards. Almost everyone has to hire an arbourist to care for them because as homeowners, we really don't understand the best ways to care for them or are intimidated by their size.
What exactly is trenching?Trenching is a simple technique that anyone can do to provide trees with a healthy 'snack' of nutrients. Trenching is a great way to re-introduce nutrient rich materials in to the soil so that tree 'rebounds' from the stress of the work/weather going on around it.
Can you trench any type of tree?YES!
Why is it important to do this? This is an excellent way to not only make your trees happy, but will also intensify that great fall colour for areas where the leaves change. It gives them that extra boost of nitrogen that they live off of. Healthy trees are better able to fight off illness and pests, and at the same time, the trees are better able to purify the air around us.
How often should tree owners do this?Once a year.
HOW TO DO IT!Dig a 12" by 6" trench at the edge of the tree limbs. Make it about 1-1.5' deep. Fill the trench with the organic kitchen waste (no proteins). Back fill the trench and replace the grass.
