Adding Colour to a Builder Home

Builder homes can be stylish but they often lack one thing: colour. Style at Home Editor-in-Chief Erin McLaughlin showed us how Section Editor Catherine Therrien elevated her own townhouse to the next level by injected fabulous pops of colour and pattern.

This modern townhome went from simple and stylish to bold and beautiful with touches of color and pattern:

The Dining Room/Living Room:

It's a great idea to start with your favorite color or a fabric that inspires you and work from there. Homeowner Catherine began with a large-scale wallpaper pattern in grayish-blue. This color was then carried through to the living room (very important in an open-plan space like this!) in the carpet and wall paint.

Catherine loves coral and it can be found accented in the dining room rug, chair upholstery and cushions. If she ever gets fed up with coral, she can easily swap these pieces out for something else.

Erin loved the way Catherine combined a white milk glass reproduction chandelier (very affordable from a big box store!) with a mid-century modern dining table.

In the living room, Catherine removed the back cushions of a neutral sofa and added multi-colored pillows. She also framed fun, fresh vintage airplane pictures - the blues and reds bring together the whole look of the room.

The Home Office:

This space is edgy and creative! Catherine used Brit-inspired colors like black, red and white, and combined different eras to create something really eclectic and bold. Traditional touches can be found in the classic linen curtains trimmed in black grosgrain ribbon, the sleek desk and white chair are modern elements, and the punky Vivienne Westwood wallpaper adds visual texture on an unexpected wall.

Catherine painted a side chair in bright red - it not only adds a simple pop of color to it also serves as additional storage.
