Ask Steven and Chris: Marriage Ref

Question:
Hi Steven and Chris!
We need you to be our "Marriage Refs". For 5 years we have been debating the right layout for our family room. We don't know what to do and can't seem to come to a mutual decision. We are also open to recommendations about general décor of the space.

Please help end this debate!

Ask Steven and Chris:
  • You have a stunning space - we think that you are well on your way here.

  • You have one entrance in the space, which works for you as far as wall space, but this is a long and narrow room, which will ultimately limit your options.

  • We are not keen on the fact that the first thing you see is the big and bulky piano.

  • We would like to see you beef up the wall with the sofa. We think that two side tables with some secondary lighting would be beautiful.

  • If you are going to keep the mirror, this will add some much needed visual weight below it. Just to be picky - We are not a fan of the "arm protectors"!

  • We like your area rug, but think that the small one is dividing the space unnecessarily.

  • We would like to see you take care of your "play area" by adding a built in bench along the back wall of your space.

  • This will add a ton of storage space and because it is customized to your room, it will blend seamlessly.

  • While your children are still you, you can add some softness to it with a cushion, but as they grow it will simply act as extra storage.

  • With some minor furniture re-arranging, look at the difference in the flow and sightlines here!
