Ask Steven and Chris: Sisal Carpeting

Question:
I love your show and have incorporated many of your design ideas into my home. With that said, I went to a flooring showroom and asked to see some sisal carpeting because you guys seem to use it alot. The man showed me hundreds of samples, so I would like  your  help me navigating my options.

Thanks a million,
Sean

Steven and Chris say:
  • You are right, Sean, we do always suggest sisal. It is one of our favorites because it is so versatile.

  • It is naturally stain resistant and does not build any static electricity. It is also sound resistant and flame retardant, which is also a bonus. It is a very strong fiber and can stand up to high traffic - so put it on your stairs and in your hallways. It is great at concealing any dirt and debris, and can be easily vacuumed.

  • It is a natural fiber that originates from a cactus plant (Agave Sisalana). It is a material much like jute or hemp. Even though sisal is only one of the plant-based rug materials, the name has come to be used generically for all plant-based rug materials. It is naturally 'green' as Sisal is a sustainable resource and is biodegradable.

  • What's great about sisal (and related products) is that it looks great in any space.
