Outerwear is the first item people see when you enter a room and the last thing seen when exiting a room.  Genny Iannucci (wardrobe from Melanie Lyne, shoes from Town Shoes) visited Chris to show him all the new styles, colours and fabrications available in the world of coats!

Capes are an important look this season and have been seen on all the major fashion runways.  A great piece to wear in the early fall or transitional times of year - throw it over your shoulders and you're ready to go!

Balance the volume of the cape by keeping the lower half of your body streamlined with a dress, skirt, slim jeans or trousers.

Where to get it:
Cape: Zara

An update on the shorter vest, this longer length vest is more streamlined for a more flattering silhouette.  Wear a vest on a milder winter day layered over a long sleeve knit sweater.
Where to get it:
Vest: Holt Renfrew

Bold colours are a great way to brighten up on a dull winter day.  Red is a classic choice and will not date so you can enjoy your coat for many winters to come.  Wear light layers to avoid bunching when wearing a belted coat - you want the belt to cinch around the tiniest part of your waist.

Where to get it:
Red Coat: The Bay

An 'it' colour this fall, camel also happens to be a classic! So feel good about making a smart outerwear investment and look for a great wool coat with sophisticated, refined details.
Where to get it:
Camel coat: Holt Renfrew

A long coat is great for semi formal or more formal occasions.  The easy wrap style of this coat makes it perfect for the day, but also looks lovely worn over a dress to keep the cold out.

Long coat: The Bay

A great piece for some guiltless luxury, faux fur allows you the warmth of fur without the guilt of its toll on your wallet or the environment.  Wear a cropped style over slim dresses, skirts and trousers to keep the attention on your coat.

General tips when buying a coat:
1.    Buy a coat at the end of the season (March) for the best prices.
2.    Ensure that your coats work with your lifestyle needs.
3.    Climate: if you live in colder weather look for a stylish down or polyfil coat.  For milder winters, you may want to opt for something lighter.
4.    Sizing: remember that you have enough room to layer under your coat without feeling constricted.
5.    Budget only allows for one coat, select it in a neutral colour that will work back to the majority of your wardrobe.
