Oscar the Grouch was in town for Waste Reduction Week, and came by the show to go against his instincts and help Steven make litterless lunches!

A typical school lunch has a lot of garbage:

• Sandwich in a baggy


• Juice box


• Packaged apple slices


• Package of Goldfish crackers


• All in a plastic grocery bag

Did you know:

• That plastic baggies can take as much as 400 years to decompose?


• That Tetra paks are made of aluminum, paper and plastic, making them difficult to recycle?

On the other hand, a litterless lunch is easy and green:

• A cloth lunch bag


• A sandwich in a food-safe container


• Orange juice in a metal drinking bottle (which doesn't transfer odours!)


• Hand-sliced apple in a food-safe snack container


• Goldfish crackers from a larger package in a reusable container

So, when you pack lunches - your own or your kids' - think about some greener alternatives!
