Schoolyard First Aid

Robyn Ashby stopped by to tell us how to treat the top five common playground accidents.

Prevention is key:

  • Make sure you know where your kids are playing.

  • Is the playground safe?

  • Is it well built?

  • Check what your child is wearing. (i.e. drawstrings versus scarves that can get caught on things)

  • Is the playground age appropriate?

  • Does your babysitter/nanny know what to look for?

Every parent and babysitter should know first aid.

Emergency kit:
Parents should always have a first aid on hand in for emergencies if they're out at the park with their kids – create your own or look into a Fanny Pack Kit available at St John Ambulance. Good things to have on hand are band-aids, cleaning wipes for cuts and scrapes, an epi-pen for allergies – the basics that your child needs for safe playtime.
In the home, there's a lot of ways to treat injuries if you don't have all the items on hand, such as using a bag of frozen veggies instead of an ice pack or a roll of saran wrap for a sling.

Top Five Injuries:

  • Falls/Head bonks

  • Road Rash

  • Insect Stings/Allergies

  • Nose bleeds

  • Broken/sprained arm
