CBC’s #StandForCanada (“Contest”)

From Monday, May 22, 2017 at 6am EDT to Sunday, July 9, 2017 at 11.59pm EDT (“Contest Period”)

No purchase required. To enter the Contest, visit the CBC website at www.cbc.ca/2017 (“Website”) during the Contest period and submit a picture or video and story (“Your Content”) to tell us how YOU stand for Canada, along with your name and the requested contact information, then click “submit”. You will then be given the option to share your picture or video and story with the hashtag #StandForCanada on social media, Facebook or Twitter. Must be received by July 9, 2017 at 11:59 PM ET. Only entries submitted via the Website will receive an entry into the Contest.

What we are looking for from your entry is a positive & appropriate picture or video and story that genuinely represents why you are proud to live in Canada. What makes you stand proud for Canada? Your photo, or video and story must relate to each other.

Limit of one entry per person per day. Your Content must not be submitted more than once during the Contest Period. For more clarity, if you enter the Contest more than once, Your Content must be different every time. If you attempt or are suspected of attempting to enter more than once per day, or use robotic, automatic, programmed or any other methods of participation not authorized by these Rules, it shall be deemed as tampering and will void your entries, votes or other results of such participation.

The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (“CIBC”, or “Prize Supplier”) is solely a Prize Supplier and is not responsible for operation of this Contest. CBC is fully responsible for the conduct and administration of the Contest, including the selection of the winner and the distribution of the prize.

Your Content Submission. Your Content will be subject to Your Content Submission Guidelines under the cbc.ca Terms of Use available at http://www.cbc.ca/aboutcbc/discover/submissions.html.

Your Content must be created and owned by you. Breaking copyright rules is not permitted (that includes copying and pasting excerpts from other sites without permission and attribution). If the majority of Your Content was created by someone else, even with a proper credit, it won’t be accepted.

Any of Your Content that is offensive and likely to expose an individual or a group of individuals to hatred or contempt on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age or mental or physical disability is prohibited.

The following kind of Your Content is also prohibited:

  • a. Pornography, vulgarity, obscenity or sexually explicit content
  • b. Anything illegal
  • c. Hate speech
  • d. Threats, harassment
  • e. Personal attacks, insults and defamatory statements
  • f. Threats or suggesting committing a criminal act
  • g. Attempts to mobilise people for any purpose outside of a CBC event

Any content deemed by CBC to be inappropriate or not suitable for its audience will be disqualified at the sole discretion of CBC.

If Your Content upload is a video, it should be no longer than 5 minutes.

Your Content should be no more than 500 characters.

Your Content will become the property of CBC and will not be returned to you. You declare that Your Content is legal, particularly with regard to compliance with copyright, rights to image, reputation and privacy, the Criminal Code and any other legislation applicable in such matters. You also declare that you hold the rights to Your Content and have consent from any people appearing in Your Content (including parental consent for minors) and all authorizations required to grant the license specified hereafter to CBC. You agree to comply with standards of proper conduct in Your Content, as specified in the Submission Guidelines available on the cbc.ca site. CBC reserves the right to decide whether to use Your Content, at its sole discretion.

By submitting Your Content, you grant CBC a royalty-free, perpetual, non-exclusive, irrevocable, unrestricted, worldwide license to publish, reproduce and distribute Your Content in all media, on all digital platforms and by any other means of communication controlled or authorized by the CBC. You waive all moral rights to Your Content and authorize CBC to use your name, picture and voice, where applicable, in conjunction with the use of Your Content. Collective agreement provisions may apply.


Contest is open to all legal residents of Canada who are over the age of majority in their province or territory of residence at the Contest opening date. Employees of CBC, Prize Supplier, and their affiliates, as well as such employees’ immediate family (father/mother, brother/sister, son/daughter) or persons living under the same roof are not eligible to enter this Contest.


On July 11, 2017 a random draw will be conducted by CBC from among all eligible entries received during the Contest Period. The first selected contestant to correctly answer the mandatory mathematical skill-testing question shall be declared the winner, subject to meeting all the conditions described in these Rules.

Winner will be contacted by telephone during the week following the random draw and should claim their prize as instructed by CBC by no later than 3 days after the date they are initially contacted. If a winner cannot be reached within 3 days following the first attempt of contact, incorrectly answers the mathematical skill-testing question, declines the prize, or fails to return the required release form, the prize shall be forfeited and CBC has the right, at its sole discretion, to select another winner.

Winner may be announced on the CBC and Prize Supplier, website and social media channels. You hereby provide consent to use your personal information for this purpose.


There is one (1) Grand Prize available to be won. The Grand Prize Winner will choose one of the following 4 unique Canadian adventures:

Option #1 - A trip for four for Whale Watching in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, including:

  • ROUNDTRIP AIRFARE, based on economy class, for a family of four (4) persons (one of whom must be the winner) from a Canadian airport closest to the winner’s residence to Saint John, New Brunswick.
  • ACCOMMODATION: Four (4) nights/ Five (5) days standard accommodations at Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Saint John (2 queen beds x 2 rooms) – Free hot breakfast each day
  • MIDSIZE 4 DOOR CAR RENTAL (pick-up and drop-off at Saint John Airport). To be eligible to rent a car, the person must be over 25 years old and have valid insurance and driver's license. If the winner is not eligible to rent a car, the winner will be required to bear the full cost of all travel required to qualify for the prize.

Option #2 - A trip for four to Old Quebec City, including:

  • ROUNDTRIP AIRFARE, based on economy class, for a family of four (4) persons (one of whom must be the winner) from a Canadian airport closest to the winner’s residence to Quebec City, Canada.
  • ACCOMMODATION: Four (4) nights/ Five (5) days standard accommodations at HOTEL 71 (2 Double Occupancy rooms)
  • QUEBEC CITY TOUR – this 2 hour tour provides a comprehensive orientation of historic and modern Quebec City. Will see the Latin Quarter, the Plains of Abraham, the Citadel, the Fortifications, the National Assembly, Place Royale, the Basilica and other points of interest within Quebec City.

  • ROUNDTRIP AIRFARE, based on economy class, for a family of four (4) persons (one of whom must be the winner) from a Canadian airport closest to the winner’s residence to Vancouver, B.C and then to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.

  • TOURS:

Three Sisters Peak Helicopter Tour - this 12 minute tour of the Spray Lakes and Spray Valley takes you over the forested slopes of Mount Buller, a favourite destination for many intermediate climbers. No individual weight restriction.

Sundance Loop Horseback Ride – during this 2-hour trail ride discover the Bow River and traverse the side of Sulphur Mountain. This excursion is suitable for novice to experienced riders. Children age 8 – 16 require parent/guardian. Children under 8 not allowed. MAX weight: 250lbs Per Person.

Banff Gondola Ride –Your adventure begins with an eight minute journey to the summit of Sulphur Mountain in a modern, fully-enclosed four passenger gondola cabin. The views become increasingly spectacular as you climb 698m (2,292 feet) to an elevation of 2,281metres (7,486 feet) at the Summit Upper Terminal the departure point for a mountaintop of activities.

All prize options include only what is specifically described and no other allowance will be granted. The winner and his/her travel companions will have to pay all other expenses including, but not limited to:

  • Transportation not specifically mentioned above (including transportation to and from the winner / guest’s homes and the airport)
  • Airport improvement fees
  • Insurance (including, but not limited to, travel insurance, medical insurance and trip cancelation insurance)
  • Taxes (including, but not limited to, departure taxes, air seat/airline taxes and applicable federal, provincial, municipal, state and/or local taxes)
  • Travel related fees/surcharges (including, but not limited to, additional/excess baggage, airport improvement fees, taxes, etc.)
  • Costs associated with obtaining travel documents (including, but not limited to passports and visas)
  • Costs associated with obtaining necessary vaccinations
  • Items of personal nature / personal expenses
  • Additional meals (unless specified)
  • Room upgrade
  • Tips & gratuities
  • In-room movies

The winner and his/her travel companions, are responsible for obtaining a valid passport if applicable and/or other required travel documentation at their own expense, which documents must be valid prior to, and for the duration of the trip. If the winner and his/her travel companions are unable to travel because they lack proper documentation, the prize will be forfeited without compensation, and a new draw may be held. Winner may be required by hotel to provide a valid credit card to cover incidental expenses.

The prize must be used between August 7, 2017 and December 22, 2017 (the “Travel Period”) excluding blackout periods. Travel blackout periods are during peak seasons: Labour Day (August 31– September 3, 2017), Thanksgiving (October 6-9, 2017) and Christmas (Dec 22 -31, 2017).The winner must be available to travel during the Travel Period. Once reservation is made, it cannot be changed for any reasons. If the winner and his/her travel companions are unable to travel on the designated dates, the prize will be forfeited without compensation and a new draw may be held.

Flights, hotels and tours are based on availability. Prize values are calculated based on Toronto departures; actual prize value may vary depending on the point of departure, time of booking, and other factors. Winner is not entitled to the difference, if any, between the actual and stated prize value.


5.1. To be declared a winner, the selected contestant must first correctly answer a mathematical skill-testing question.

5.2. Each winner shall sign a release declaring their eligibility as stipulated in Section 3 of these Rules; agreeing that their name, image and/or voice may be used for advertising purposes related to this Contest free of charge; and releasing CBC, Prize Supplier, their affiliates, as well as their respective directors, officers and employees (the “Contest Parties”) from all liability for any damage or loss arising from participation in this Contest or from the awarding, acceptance or use of the prize.

Anyone accompanying the winner in connection with the prize, its parent or guardian if applicable, shall sign a release agreeing that their name, image and/or voice may be used for advertising purposes related to this Contest free of charge, and releasing the Contest Parties from all liability for any damage or loss arising from use of the prize.

5.3. The prize shall be accepted as is and may not be exchanged or refunded for an amount of money, sold or transferred. No substitutions will be allowed. Any unused portion of a prize will be forfeited.

5.4. If the prize cannot be awarded as described in these Rules, CBC and Prize Supplier reserve the right to substitute a prize or prize component with another of comparable monetary value, as determined in their sole discretion. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, CBC and Prize Supplier may substitute any travel component of the prize if the winner selects a destination within 100 kilometers of their place of residence, and winner shall not be entitled to the difference, if any.

5.5. Refusal to accept the prize releases the Contest Parties from any obligation toward the winner.

5.6. If a contestant makes any false statement, (s)he will be automatically disqualified from the Contest.

5.7. The Contest Parties assume no liability for any loss, damage or injury, including without limitation: (i) lost, stolen, delayed, damaged, misdirected, late, destroyed, illegible or incomplete entries; (ii) loss, theft or damage to software or computer or telephone data, including any breach of privacy; (iii) fraudulent calls; (iv) inability of any person to participate in the Contest for any reason including mistaken addresses on mail or e-mail; technical, computer or telephone malfunctions or other problems with computer on-line systems, servers, access providers, computer equipment, or software; congestion on the internet or at any website, or any combination of the foregoing; (v) damage to any person’s computer, including as a result of playing or downloading any material relating to the Contest; (vi) any delay or inability to act resulting from an event or situation beyond their control, including a strike, lockout or other labour dispute at their location or the locations of the organizations and businesses whose services are used to administer this Contest; (vii) prizes that are lost, damaged or misdirected during shipping or (viii) loss, damage, defects, or inability to use the prize once awarded to the winner for any reason whatsoever.

5.8. Contestants found tampering with or abusing any aspect of this Contest, including but not limited to acting in violation of these Rules, attempting to participate in the Contest more than the maximum number of times allowed, to be acting with the intent to disrupt the normal operation of this Contest, as determined by CBC, will be disqualified. The discovery of any use of robotic, automatic, macro, programmed, third party or like methods to participate in the Contest will void any attempted participation effected by such methods and the disqualification of the contestant utilizing the same in CBC's sole and absolute discretion.

5.9. When the Contest Rules allow entry via Facebook, Twitter or any other social network, the terms of use of these social networks apply and the social network, as well as its directors and officers, assume no liability whatsoever in connection with the Contest.

5.10. CBC reserves the right to cancel or suspend this Contest should a virus, bug or other cause beyond their reasonable control corrupt the security or proper administration of the Contest. Any attempt to deliberately damage any website or to undermine the legitimate operation of this Contest is a violation of criminal and civil laws. Should such an attempt be made, CBC reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law, including criminal prosecution.

5.11. All personal information, such as name and contact information, is collected by CBC solely for the purposes of administering this Contest and shall not be used for any other purpose without your express consent. 5.12. If the identity of a contestant is disputed, the authorized account holder of the e-mail address submitted at the time of entry will be deemed to be the contestant. The individual assigned to the e-mail address for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address is considered the authorized account holder. A selected contestant may be required to provide proof that (s) he is the authorized account holder of the e-mail address associated with the selected entry. All entries must be submitted from a valid e-mail account that may be identified by reverse domain name search. The sole determinant of time for the purposes of receipt of a valid entry in this Contest will be the Contest server.

5.13. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries. All entries that are incomplete, illegible, damaged, irregular, have been submitted through illicit means, using any robotic, automatic programmed method that artificially increases the odds of winning or do not conform to or satisfy any condition of the rules may be disqualified by the CBC. CBC is not responsible for any errors or omissions in printing or advertising this Contest.

5.14. CBC reserves the right to amend the Contest Rules or to terminate the Contest at any time without any liability to any contestant. Any amendments to these Contest rules will be posted on the Website.

5.15. By entering, you agree to abide by the Contest Rules and the decisions of CBC which decisions are final and binding on all contestants.
