"There are so many great professionals committed to making me a better athlete."
After winning silver in the 1500-metre T-37 event at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, Petro-Canada FACE™ athlete Liam Stanley is now in training with FACE™ coach and two-time Olympic marathon runner Bruce Deacon for the world championships in London in August.
CBC Sports’ Kevin Light spent two days training with Stanley and Deacon at Oak Bay High School in Victoria, B.C. to photograph and capture the unique bond between the athlete and the coach.
Stanley had a stroke at birth and as a result his right side does not have the same functionality.
Bruce Deacon competed in men’s marathon at both the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
"Receiving (the Petro-Canada FACE™ grant) was a huge honour. The funding helps me to access more training opportunities and has given me the opportunity to travel to meets that I would not otherwise be able to compete in."
