Second-seeded Eugenie Bouchard cruised into the second round of the Nuremberg Cup by beating Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-0, 6-3 on Monday.

Most of the world's best players are not competing this week ahead of the French Open on Monday, but Montreal's Bouchard could use the work after struggling at previous clay court tournaments this spring.

Bouchard, ranked 19th in the world, lost her last three matches before Monday.

Fourth-seeded Elina Svitolina also advanced, beating Iveta Melzer 7-5, 6-4 in a much closer match.

However, fifth-seeded Yvonne Meusburger was eliminated after losing 6-3, 6-4 to Karolina Pliskova.

Seventh-seeded Caroline Garcia needed three sets to overcome Julia Glushko 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 and eighth-seeded Annika Beck cruised past Jana Cepelova 6-2, 6-3.

Karin Knapp defeated Shahar Peer 6-3, 6-2 to also advance.
