The Canadian triathlon team announced Tuesday the five athletes it’s sending to the London Olympics.

Former Olympic champion Simon Whitfield will be joined by Kyle Jones, Brent McMahon, Paula Findlay and Kathy Tremblay.

Whitfield and Findlay were named to the Olympic team in November, leaving the rest of Canada’s triathletes to compete for the other three spots.

Whitfield will be making his fourth consecutive appearance at the Olympics. The 37-year-old from Victoria won gold in triathlon’s Olympic debut in 2000 in Sydney, and captured silver in 2008 in Beijing with a memorable finishing kick. He finished 11th at the 2004 Athens Games.

"I have great camaraderie with Brent and Kyle," Whitfield said in a news release. "Having three athletes on the start line will give Canada a better chance of achieving our goal in 2012.”

Findlay rose to the top of the women’s world rankings last year after winning the first three World Triathlon Series races of the season. But her campaign was cut short by a hip injury, which she later discovered was a small tear of the labrum. The 22-year-old from Edmonton opted for treatment over surgery in hopes of being ready for London, but the injury kept her out of this season’s first two events.

“It definitely hasn’t been the smoothest road this year," Findlay said on Tuesday's conference call announcing the team. "It’s been difficult, but I am progressing."

Findlay said she isn't sure whether she'll compete before the Olympics. Her focus for the moment is on getting her fitness back up and working on her mechanics so she's able to run pain-free.

“It’s been a slower progression than I anticipated, honestly," she said. "[But] I’m a lot better than I was a month ago."

Victoria's McMahon won bronze at last year’s Pan American Games in Mexico. He finished 39th at the 2004 Olympics and did not compete in the 2008 Games.

Jones, from Oakville, Ont., was fourth at the Pan Am Games.

Montreal’s Tremblay finished fifth at the Pan Am Games, and was 31st at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Olympic women’s triathlon race takes place on Aug. 4 at London’s Hyde Park. The men’s event goes Aug. 7.
