Welsh cricket umpire dies after being struck by ball

Last Updated: Sunday, July 5, 2009 | 10:30 AM ET

A veteran British cricket umpire was killed Saturday after being struck on the head by a ball during a game in Wales.

Alcwyn Jenkins, 72, was officiating a Welsh division one cricket league match between host Swansea and Llangennech when he took the blow, collapsing immediately.

The South Wales Association match was halted.

"I'm led to believe it was one of the most freak accidents you could ever imagine on the cricket field," said Neil Hobbs, the honorary chair of the association, to BBC News.

Jenkins was taken to hospital but did not recover, the BBC reports. No further details were available.

"Everybody probably in south Wales knows Alcwyn through cricket," Hobbs said. "It's a very, very sad day and I feel sorry for his children."
