Stephanie Dubois smacks a forehand during Fed Cup action on Saturday at Uniprix. (Ryan Remiorz/Canadian Press)Aleksandra Wozniak and Stephanie Dubois each won their singles matches before combining to win the doubles as well, as Canada swept Paraguay in Saturday's final of the Fed Cup Americas Zone I tennis event at Uniprix Stadium in Montreal.
The win qualified Canada for a playoff April 25 and 26 to access World Group II, which includes the ninth- to 16th-ranked teams in the world, and Wozniak is confident Canada can make it into the world elite.
"I feel Canada belongs among the best countries in the world, I think we're ready," the Blainville, Que., native said, draped in a Canadian flag. "I've represented Canada all over the world and I think we'll be able to make that jump in April."
Dubois, of nearby Laval, Que., breezed by Paraguay's Veronica Cepede Royg 6-0, 6-1 in only 42 minutes, while Wozniak was just as efficient in dispatching Rossana De Los Rios 6-1, 6-0 in 45 minutes.
"I was happy that I was able to pick up my game today, and I needed to because it was the final," said Wozniak, by far the event's top-ranked player at No. 32 in the world. "I didn't come in to the match with any expectations, I just needed to concentrate on every point."
Canada will play a head-to-head match against one of four countries who lose in the first round of World Group II, which wraps up Sunday. The draw to determine which country Canada faces will be held Tuesday.
The week posed no challenge for the Canadian team, which also included Valerie Tereault of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., and Toronto's Sharon Fichman. Canada lost only 14 games in 18 sets while sweeping Paraguay, the Bahamas and Puerto Rico by 3-0 scores.
The doubles team of Dubois and Fichman didn't lose a game all week, while Wozniak and Dubois won 6-0, 6-3 Saturday against Paraguay's Isaura Enrique Aguilar and Cepede Royg to complete the sweep.
"It's good for their confidence," said Canadian head coach Sylvain Bruneau. "They can leave here feeling good about how they played this week."
Wozniak, 21, split the first two games of her match with De Los Rios, the world No. 95, but didn't lose another the rest of the way.
In other Fed Cup action, Ana Ivanovic beat Ai Sugiyama and Jelena Jankovic defeated Ayumi Morita to give Serbia a 2-0 lead over Japan.
Italy took the first two matches against France. Flavia Pennetta topped Amelie Mauresmo in three sets, with Francesca Schiavone winning in straight sets over Alize Cornet.
The Czech Republic and Spain are tied 1-1, as are the U.S. and Argentina. Sisters Venus and Serena Williams are not competing for the Americans.
Russia is up 2-0 on China, with Slovakia unbeaten in two against Belgium.
