Peter Forsberg has given up on returning to the NHL this season, but he hasn't abandoned his effort to resume his hockey career.

"I will not play in the NHL this season, that's for certain," Forsberg said Friday in Sweden. "If I play, it will be with MoDo."

MoDo is the club team in Forsberg's hometown of Ornskoldsvik.

Forsberg has spent the last couple of weeks in Ornskoldsvik, testing his ailing right foot to see whether he will make a last attempt at a comeback.

The 35-year-old forward made a late-season return to the Colorado Avalanche last year, but injuries kept him out of nine of 18 regular season NHL games and three of four games in the second round of the playoffs.

In addition to winning two Stanley Cups with the Avalanche, he also won the NHL MVP award in 2003 after scoring 29 goals and adding 77 assists.
