Philadelphia Flyers forward Daniel Briere suffered an unspecified lower body injury in the second period of Tuesday's 3-1 victory over the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.

It was his second outing following a six-game absence to recover from surgery for a torn abdominal muscle.

"It has nothing to do with the surgery," Briere said. "It is just another thing that popped up."

Briere, 31, staked the Flyers to a 1-0 lead, using Islanders defenceman Brett Skinner as a screen and rifling the puck by goaltender Joey MacDonald with 6:20 remaining in the second.

No sooner had Briere scored than he departed for the dressing room and did not return.

"I'm playing it on the cautious side," Briere said. "It is a lower body injury and, at this point, I would rather not say more."

Briere returned to the lineup Saturday night and scored the opening goal in a 2-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Gatineau, Que., native has five goals and four assists for nine points in eight games this season, his second with Philadelphia.

Briere has totalled 198 goals and 457 points in 570 NHL games since he was drafted 24th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996.

He also spent three-plus seasons with the Buffalo Sabres.
