Aleksandra Wozniak gave Montreal fans plenty to cheer about Tuesday night at the Rogers Cup women's tennis tournament.

Wozniak, from Blainville, Que., defeated teenager Chan Yung-Jan of Taiwan 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 in an exciting back-and-forth opening-round match. She advances to the second round where she will face No. 2 seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia Wednesday night.

Wozniak is one of two Canadians remaining in the singles draw. Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Que., will also play in the second round against 13th-seeded Maria Kirilenko of Russia.

"I think all of Blainville was here," said Wozniak after her victory. "It was so great. They gave me so much energy in the match."

Wozniak, 20, recently became the first Canadian woman to win a WTA tour event in 20 years, defeating the likes of Serena Williams, Marian Bartoli and Francesca Schiavone at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Calif.

Wozniak breezed through the first set, breaking Chan's serve twice to take the set in 25 minutes.

Chan didn't roll over and die, though. She jumped out to a 5-0 lead before serving out to win the second set 6-1.

Buoyed by the Montreal crowd, Wozniak broke her opponent's serve in the sixth game of the third set to take a 4-2 lead, but Chan quickly returned the favour and then served out to make it 4-4.

Wozniak won a sensational rally to go up 6-5 and then broke Chan's serve again to win the match.

In the final match of the night, Slovakian teen Dominika Cibulkova pulled of a major upset by defeating No. 5 seed Elena Dementieva of Russia 6-4, 6-2.

Pelletier, Fichman ousted

Earlier on Tuesday, No. 12 Nadia Petrova of Russia, making her eighth appearance at the Canadian event, dominated Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., 6-0, 6-1. Jill Craybas of the United States topped Toronto's Sharon Fichman 6-4, 6-3.

Fichman, still an amateur, was playing with nothing to lose.

"It was definitely an experience, being my first main draw match ever in a WTA event," said Fichman. "Especially with it being in Canada, it was a great experience.

"It really felt amazing to have the Canadian support and people cheering for me. I'm looking forward to next year."

No. 4 seed and former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova easily moved on to the third round after fellow Russian Alla Kudrayavtseva retired with an injury. Kuznetsova was leading 6-1, 1-0.

Kuznetsova was the first to play of the top eight tournament seeds, who each received byes into the second round.

Teenager Victoria Azarenka of Belarus had an easy time in her opening match in Montreal.

The No. 11 seed, who turns 19 on Thursday, rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over American qualifier Jamea Jackson, breaking Jackson's serve five times.

Azarenka has jumped to No. 16 in the women's rankings from 30th over the course of 2008.
