Unbeaten Montreal boxer Lucian Bute will get a chance to fight for the IBF super-middleweight title, InterBox confirmed on Thursday.

The Montreal-based promotion announced Bute is scheduled to challenge Alejandro Berrio of Colombia on Oct. 11 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

"I'm happy to fight in front of my fans," said Bute. "I've already started my preparations and I'm confident I will win and become world champion."

The Romanian-born southpaw (20-0 with 16 knockouts) earned the title shot following an impressive 12-round unanimous decision over Australia's Sakio Bika on June 15 during an elimination bout in Montreal.

Both sides agreed on the prize money and venue late Wednesday night, avoiding a purse bid scheduled for Thursday. While the IBF approved of the terms, financial figures were not released.

Berrio, 31, (24-6) won the vacant 168-pound IBF title on March 3 after stopping Germany's Robert Stieglitz in the third round.

"He has 25 knockouts, so he hits hard," said Bute, who has permanent resident status in Canada and is awaiting citizenship. "He's aggressive and he has a good record. But I'm not afraid of that."

Canadian fighters have won a pair world titles in the last two years.

Joachim Alcine (29-0) of Laval, Que., captured the WBA junior welterweight title from American Travis Simms on July 7 in Bridgeport, Conn.

Steve Molitor (24-0) of Mississauga, Ont., won the vacant IBF super-bantamweight belt after knocking out Britain's Michael Hunter in November 2006. Molitor then successfully defended in July in Rama, Ontario with a ninth-round TKO of South Africa's Takalani Ndlovu.

Molitor was the first Ontario-born titleholder to defend a world belt in the province.
