The upcoming Rogers Cup women's tennis tournament in Toronto lost another marquee name on Saturday, with two-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova announcing she will not participate.

"Unfortunately at this stage of the summer and after many matches over the course of the past two weeks, my body is in need of rest," Sharapova said in a release on her website.

The World No. 2 won last week's San Diego Classic and is playing this weekend in Los Angeles.

The Russian player will no doubt want to get some rest ahead of defending her title at the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 27.

Sharapova is the latest big name to bow out due to injury or rest, a list that includes past tournament champions Serena Williams, Amelie Mauresmo and Martina Hingis, as well as this year's Wimbledon champion, Venus Williams.

Still, the Rogers Cup will boast five of the top six ranked players in the world — No. 1 Justin Henin, No. 3 Jelena Jankovic, No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 5 Ana Ivanovic and No. 6 Anna Chakvetadze.

Ivanovic is the defending champion, while Henin won the event in 2003.

Canadians Aleksandra Wozniak, Stephanie Dubois and Marie-Eve Pelletier have received wild cards to the main draw of the Rogers Cup women's tennis tournament.

This year's tournament kicks off Monday at York University in Toronto, with the semifinals set for Aug. 18 (CBC, 1 and 7 p.m. ET) and the final on Aug. 19 (CBC, 2 p.m. ET).
