British Columbia Lions quarterback Dave Dickenson will be sidelined indefinitely because of concussion-like symptoms.

Dickenson, 34, was examined Wednesday by Toronto neurosurgeon Dr. Karen Johnston, who recommended he continue treatment after consulting with Lions physician Dr. Bob McCormack.

Asked how many games Dickenson might miss, Lions general manager and head coach Wally Buono said: "I don't think it is proper for people who aren't medically trained to make assessments or make statements on something they aren't sure of. We are going to wait and be patient and let our medical staff inform us."

Dickenson suffered his third concussion in less than two years when tackled by defensive lineman Fred Perry during the second quarter of a 42-12 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on July 13.

Backup quarterback Buck Pierce started in place of Dickenson last Thursday and completed 17 of 26 pass attempts for 187 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions as the Lions (4-0) trimmed the winless Hamilton Tiger-Cats 22-18.

However, Pierce, already nursing a sore right hand, injured his left side when hit by defensive lineman Nautyn McKay-Loescher on a rollout with 1:07 left in the third quarter.

Pierce returned briefly, only to be replaced by third-string pivot Jarious Jackson, who completed three of five passes for 80 yards and engineered two scoring drives in the fourth.

Pierce is expected to start Saturday evening, when B.C. visits the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium (CBC, 6:30 p.m. ET).
