Hockey experts knew Washington Capitals rookie Alexander Ovechkin would be good – but little did they know just how good the young Russian star would be.

On Monday, Ovechkin got his 100th point in style, scoring a goal with 90 seconds left in overtime to give the Capitals a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins.

He became the first rookie to amass 100 points in a season since Joe Juneau and Teemu Selanne accomplished the feat during the 1992-93 campaign.

Ovechkin also registered his 49th goal and needs just one more to become the first rookie with 50 goals since Selanne in 1992-93.

Mike Bossy and Joe Nieuwendyk also netted 50 in their first NHL seasons.

Ovechkin ended a six-game goalless drought with Monday's effort.

"I think about [scoring 50 goals], but when you go on the ice, you must try not to think about it," said Ovechkin earlier this month when asked about reaching the historic plateau.

"It's hard.

"When I was young, I scored 50 once and right now, I have a situation where I can score 50. But if you're thinking that you must score 50, you'll never score. You have to play the way you played before. Then you'll score."

Ovechkin has dazzled hockey watchers with his blazing speed, slick puck-handling ability and accurate shot.

His highlight-reel goals have become a staple on sports channels and fuel for water-cooler conversation. Earlier this year, Ovechkin scored one of the most spectacular goals in hockey history – while on his back.

The Capitals, who are out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture, have four games remaining in the season. They next play Thursday in Atlanta against the Thrashers.
