The International Association of Athletic Federations made the announcement in Osaka, Japan on Wednesday.
Organizers of the Moncton bid were hoping to land the 2008 games, but after a tie in the first round of voting, IAAF members awarded that event to the city of Bydgoscz, Poland.
Mayor Lorne Mitton says he's happy the city will have an extra couple of years to prepare and is confident the federal government will honour a commitment to help pay for a new stadium with room for about 10,000 spectators.
The new stadium will also have space for about 200 members of the international media.
