Kerry Wood has knee surgery

Last Updated: Wednesday, March 8, 2006 | 6:04 PM ET

Oft-injured Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood underwent successful surgery Tuesday on his right knee.

Wood, 28, had a torn medial meniscus repaired during the 20-minute procedure performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Lewis Yocum.

Because the surgery was minor in nature, the right-hander will resume bullpen sessions next week and continue to rehabilitate the shoulder he had surgically repaired last August.

Wood started only 10 games for the Cubs last season, posting a 3-4 record with a 4.23 earned-run average and 77 strikeouts in 66 innings over 21 appearances.

He also spent 97 games on the disabled list.

Wood is 70-54 overall with a 3.66 ERA, 11 complete games and five shutouts in 185 appearances (174 starts) since debuting for Chicago on April 12, 1998.

Named National League rookie of the year in 1998, Wood sat out the next season following elbow ligament replacement surgery.

Wood also missed two months with a strained right triceps in 2004.
