The incident occurred during the second period Monday night, a game won by Ottawa, 4-0. Artyukhin was given a match penalty after taking Vermette's helmet off his head and striking him over the head with it during a scuffle.
"I've never seen a player take it off the other player's head and then hit him over the head with it," Senators coach Bryan Murray said after the game. "I don't know why the kid did that. I don't know what was going on there even."
Vermette required several stitches for a cut on the top of his head.
Artyukhin is eligible to return on Sunday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
