Vancouver's Ed Jovanovski has undergone successful abdominal surgery and the Canucks will now patiently wait to see if their star defenceman will be back before the end of the season.

"The procedure was short, which is what they were hoping and that's good news," Canucks GM Dave Nonis told The Province. "Sometimes they go in there and they find more things wrong and the procedure is long as was the case with Brad Richards (who was inactive for four months following his 2005 surgery).

"Eddy was in and out quick."

The procedure was performed by specialist Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia on Wednesday . It is believed Jovanovski had a tear where the abdominal and groin muscles connect.

Nonis added that the team would have a better idea of when the defenceman will be back in the lineup when he resumes skating, which is expected to be about three weeks away. Jovanovski could be out from six to eight weeks, or in the worst-case scenario, could be done for the season and playoffs.

Jovanovski learned Monday that he required the surgery.

The 29-year-old initially strained the groin last Dec. 28 and missed 11 games.

He returned to action on Jan. 22, playing just two games before aggravating the injury.

Jovanovki has posted six goals and 28 points in 39 games for the Canucks this season, his 10th since drafted first overall by the Florida Panthers in 1994.
