Tony Dungy's son laid to rest in Florida

Last Updated: Tuesday, December 27, 2005 | 7:37 PM ET

National Football League players, coaches and staff gathered in Florida on Tuesday for funeral services for 18-year old James Dungy, the son of Indianapolis Colts' head coach Tony Dungy.

James Dungy was found dead of an apparent suicide last week.

Six charter buses brought nearly the entire Colts organization to the funeral, which was also attended by past and present members of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the elder Dungy's former club, Bucs' owner Malcolm Glazer, former general manager Rich McKay, now general manager for the Atlanta Falcons, and former Buccaneer Warren Sapp.

Tampa stars Derrick Brooks and Simeon Rice also attended, as did New York Jets coach Herman Edwards and Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith.

"Thank you for the love, the prayers and the support that we've received from the people of Tampa, the people of Indianapolis and the people all over the country," coach Dungy said after the funeral.

"They've been very, very great and gracious to us in a time of grief for our family. We loved our son very much. He loved us and we miss him terribly. We also understand that we have some tremendous promises from God and God promises to be with us. He's with us in the great times. He's with us in the tough times.

There is no word on when Dungy will return to the Colts, who are being handled on an interim basis by assistant head coach Jim Caldwell.
