Rugby Canada gets development funding

Last Updated: Tuesday, September 13, 2005 | 9:58 AM ET

Rugby's world governing body is allocating $10.5 million Cdn for development of the sport in the United States and Canada. The International Rugby Board wants to help tier two Rugby Canada and USA Rugby to reach the elite first tier. Canada is currently ranked 13th in the world while the U.S. is 14th.

Each federation will receive $3.3 million over three years. As well, $3.9 million will be invested in a U.S.-Canada regional competition.

"There is little doubt that the planned development programs will be a major boost for rugby on the North American continent, which has great potential for growth," said Mark Egan, head of IRB rugby services. "This tournament will provide a new level of competition for aspiring elite players in the regions and will expand the depth of the player bases in both unions."
