The Calgary Flames have traded defenceman Mike Commodore to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a third-round pick in Saturday's NHL draft.

Commodore, with his puffy mane of red hair, became a popular and instantly-recognizable figure during the Flames' drive to the Stanley Cup final in 2003-04.

Commodore appeared in just 12 regular-season games with the Flames in 2003-04. However, he played in 20 playoff contests in Calgary's post-season run that ended with the Flames' loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup final.

During the recent NHL lockout, Commodore played for the Lowell Lock Monsters, an AHL affiliate shared by the Hurricanes and Flames.

"Our staff got to know Mike really well during his time with Lowell last year," said Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford.

"He's a big, young player that we feel that will be a good addition to our defence."

Commodore, a native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., made headlines during the lockout when he suggested he'd play under a salary cap if both the players and owners consented to it.
