Chacin, Blue Jays blank Angels

Last Updated: Tuesday, August 2, 2005 | 10:03 PM ET

Toronto Blue Jays rookie pitcher Gustavo Chacin cruised to his fourth consecutive victory, 8-0 over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in front of 18,754 fans at the Rogers Centre on Tuesday.

Chacin (10-5) scattered six hits over eight scoreless innings, striking out four batters and walking two in a splendid start.

The crafty left-hander threw 95 pitches, including 57 for strikes.

"Ten wins is great," Chacin said. "I just have to keep it going."

"I saw a little Fernando in him," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said, referring to Fernando Valenzuela, the flamboyant Mexican southpaw who became the first pitcher to capture the Cy Young Award and rookie of the year honours in the same season (1981).

"That guy (Chacin) pitched a terrific game. Any time we had a count in our favour or had a chance to do something, he came up with a great pitch."

Miguel Batista recorded the final three outs, but not a save.

Shea Hillenbrand went 3-for-5 with a home run and four runs batted in for the Blue Jays (50-49), who pounded out 14 hits.

Vernon Wells also homered while Orlando Hudson had three hits with an RBI.

Rookie Russ Adams scored twice and drove in a run out of the leadoff spot.

"When you aren't making good pitches against good hitters, they're going to be magnified," Scioscia said. "Good hitters don't miss them."

Corey Koskie returned to the lineup and went 1-4.

Koskie, from Anola, Man., had been sidelined since May 19 with a fractured right thumb.

"It was nice to see him standing over there," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "The more he plays, the better he is going to get.

"He's a big part of this. He kind of gives us that new look we were looking for in the beginning of the year."

Vladimir Guerrero had three hits in a losing cause for the Angels (59-41).

He entered Tuesday's contest with a .175 batting average for July.

Anaheim starter Paul Byrd lasted only three innings in suffering the loss.

Byrd (9-7) was rocked for seven runs on 10 hits and a walk, despite winning four of his past five decisions.

Kerry Gregg tossed 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief before giving way to rookie Jose Peralta.

"It's frustrating for me that I could only give us three innings," Byrd said. "I feel like I dropped the ball.

"It seems like if we played them to pull, they hit it the other way. And if we played them the other way, they pulled it."

Toronto took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Adams walked, Frank Catalanotto singled and Hillenbrand walloped a three-run homer to left field, his 13th.

The Blue Jays scored four times in the fourth inning to make it 7-0.

Eric Hinske singled and scored on a double by Alex Rios, who raced home on Hudson's RBI double.

Adams then singled in Hudson to finish Byrd and later scored on Hillenbrand's RBI single.

Wells completed the scoring in the eighth inning with his 20th homer, a solo shot to left off Peralta.
