Edinger snapped up by Vikings

Last Updated: Monday, May 30, 2005 | 6:37 PM ET

The Minnesota Vikings signed placekicker Paul Edinger to a one-year contract Tuesday.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Edinger, who was released last weekend by the Chicago Bears, tallied a career-low 67 points and missed an NFL-high nine field goals last season.

The 27-year-old split the uprights on 15 of 24 field-goal attempts, a 62.5 per cent average but well below his career success rate of 75.3 per cent – a Bears record.

"Hopefully that's as bad as it gets for me," Edinger said. "I know what I was doing wrong.

"I fixed that and I feel comfortable now with the way I'm kicking. Very comfortable."

Edinger scored 462 points on 110 of 146 field goals and all 132 converts in 80 career games for Chicago, who chose him in the sixth round – 174th overall – out of Michigan State in the 2000 NFL Draft.

Edinger will compete with Aaron Elling at Vikings training camp.

"We're really high on Aaron and we like Paul," noted Vikings vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski. "It should be a good battle."

Two years ago, Minnesota signed Edinger to a five-year offer sheet worth $7 million US that was matched by Chicago.
