Teixeira wins AL weekly award

Texas Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira was named the American League player of the week.

Teixeira hit safely in all six games he played last week, averaging .458 (11-24) with two home runs, five runs batted in and six runs scored.

The 25-year-old also boasted a .500 on-base percentage and an .875 slugging percentage, plus led the AL with four doubles and 21 total bases.

Teixeira is batting .286 with 10 HRs, 28 RBIs and 33 runs in 44 games this season, his third with the Rangers.

He is a .272 hitter overall with 74 HRs, 224 RBIs and 200 runs in 335 MLB games since being drafted fifth overall by Texas in 2001.

Teixeira won a Silver Slugger Award as a major-league sophomore last season.
