A cache of memorabilia from Jean Beliveau's legendary hockey career has netted oodles of cash in an online auction.

The auction of 195 of Beliveau's personal mementoes closed on Tuesday after raising nearly $1 million US.

When the items went up for sale in late January, the head of the auction company said he believed the collection could fetch about $400,000.

The most expensive item was Beliveau's Stanley Cup ring from the 1958-59 season. It sold for $69,045.40.

An unknown bidder paid $42,900 for a wool Montreal Canadiens jersey worn by Beliveau during the 1967 season.

A pair of seats from the venerable Montreal Forum autographed by Beliveau combined to earn nearly $7,000. More than $2,000 was bid for Beliveau's personal collection of hockey cards

Some other items included:

  • A 1957-58 Montreal Canadiens Stanley Cup championship trophy sold for $37,135.80
  • Beliveau's 1965 Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the playoff's most valuable player, earned $27,964.30
  • The puck commemorating Beliveau's first NHL goal fetched $17,908.60

Nicknamed "Le Gros Bill," Beliveau is one of the most successful and beloved players in the history of the NHL. When his 19-year career with the Montreal Canadiens was over, he'd amassed 507 goals, 1,219 points and won an incredible 10 Stanley Cups.

Beliveau says the money will provide a financial boost to his family, including his daughter and two granddaughters.
