Batista to play ball in Japan

Last Updated: Tuesday, January 11, 2005 | 10:02 AM ET

Veteran major leaguer Tony Batista has signed a lucrative two-year deal to play pro baseball in Japan.

The former Montreal Expos' and Toronto Blue Jays' third baseman reached a $15-million US, two-year agreement with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League on Tuesday.

"We expect a lot from him," said Fukuoka manager Sadaharu Oh. "He has a wealth of major league experience and can contribute to our club both on offence and defence."

Batista, 31, said several MLB teams showed interest in signing him but none came close to matching Fukuoka's offer.

Batista clubbed 32 home runs and had 110 RBIs with the Expos last season. The nine-year pro has also spent time with the Oakland Athletics, Arizona Diamondbacks and Baltimore Orioles during his career.

The Hawks also announced the signing of former Seattle Mariners infielder/outfielder Jolbert Cabrera.

Cabrera hit .270 and had 47 RBIS in 113 games for the Mariners last season.
